Upright casks used to age Barolo. Many producers use the large casks, usually made from Slovenian oak, to age the wines without making them overly "oaky." Recent shifts in taste demand fruitiness over the "toasty vanilla" flavors imparted by smaller barriques, which became popular in the 60s.
